Chris Ruble | Remembering Matt Dees & Cricket Warren of The Fast Mothers

Derrick and Jeff talk with Chris Ruble of The Fast Mothers, who appears from the band’s “Garage Mahal” with their Southern Heavyweight Champions of Rock ’N’ Roll belt displayed, to remember former bassist Matt Dees and guitarist Cricket Warren, both of whom passed away this year. Chris explains how Matt joined after a decade and became a key writer and “drill sergeant” for the rhythm section, re-energizing the band, shaping the first two records with Jimmy Fulp/Broken Snare, and driving the “New Stax” video concept, casting, choreography, and financing; Matt also helped bring in key members Wayne Walker and Cricket, and secured pivotal gigs at Murphy’s. They discuss Matt’s earlier bands (Bad Apple, 714, Backwood Justice) and Cricket’s musicianship and battle with pancreatic cancer. The conversation closes with Matt’s devotion to his daughter Nyla and the band’s current lineup with John Davis and Chris Hinkle, plus plans to write new material and return to the studio.
